Hi! I'm Lola, the artist and owner behind owloArt, a small stationery brand creating cute stickers, keychains, enamel pins, and other cozy accessories featuring my original characters.
Funny enough, owloArt wasn't something I originally planned.
I started by sharing semi-realistic digital portraits on social media, and as my audience grew, people began asking if they could purchase my artwork. Around that time, a friend asked me to draw a cute chibi illustration of her Shiba Inu. After I posted it online, she encouraged me to sell that style too.
To my surprise, people absolutely loved the cute illustrations. Soon after, someone requested a red panda drawing, and that little character became one of my first best sellers. That's when everything clicked. I realized creating cute, comforting artwork brought me the most joy, and it resonated with so many people as well.
Looking back, that one small commission completely changed the direction of my business. It eventually grew into the world of original characters that owloArt is today.
Like many creative businesses, the beginning wasn't always smooth.
One of my biggest challenges early on was figuring out where to focus my energy.
Around that time, I had just finished graduate school during a difficult hiring market. My previous contract had ended, and while I was applying for design jobs, I was also streaming, taking on illustration work, and trying to grow owloArt at the same time.
I wasn't sure which path would work out, so I was trying a little bit of everything.
As owloArt continued to grow, I realized it was the project I was most excited to wake up and work on each day. Instead of spreading myself too thin, I started investing more of my time into improving my shop, designing new products, and creating a better experience for my customers.
That shift made a huge difference. Rather than trying to do everything at once, I focused on growing one thing intentionally while continuing to adapt as new opportunities came along.
Of course, running a small business still meant wearing every hat: from designing products and answering customer emails to packing orders and shipping packages. Finding ways to save time became essential.
One of those changes was switching to a thermal label printer. Before that, I printed labels on the letter-sized sticker paper and cut them by hand. It worked when I had only a few orders, but as my business grew, it quickly became one of the most time-consuming parts of fulfillment.
Automating that step gave me more time to focus on designing, connecting with my community, and growing the business.
The biggest surprise was realizing people connected with my work in ways I never expected.
I didn't know whether my products would sell until I started listening to my community.
The more I shared my cute illustrations, the more people requested specific animals, emotions, and situations they related to. Many comments would say things like, "That's literally me!" or "I need this because it reminds me of my cat."
That's when I realized I wasn't just selling stickers or keychains; I was creating little moments that made people feel seen, understood, and smile.
Even today, I regularly ask my community what they'd like to see next through polls, surveys, and conversations on social media. Some of my favorite collections have come directly from those interactions, and they've helped me create products people are genuinely excited about.
As my business grew, I realized branding was much more than just a logo.
One of the biggest branding decisions I made wasn't just choosing colors or designing a logo; it was creating a character that represented my brand.
Owlo, my sleepy bunny mascot, gradually became the face of owloArt. Instead of simply recognizing my logo, customers began recognizing the character itself. Over time, Owlo developed a personality, a little world, and a group of friends that many customers have grown attached to.
Along with my mascot, I focused on creating a consistent visual identity. I kept my packaging, product photography, colors, and illustrations cohesive so every order felt unmistakably "owloArt."
I also wanted the personality of my business to come through in everything I shared. Whether it's my product descriptions, social media captions, or packaging, I try to make customers feel like they're receiving something from a friend rather than just placing an online order.
To me, that's what branding really is. It's creating an experience people remember, not just a product they purchase. People may discover owloArt because they liked one sticker, but many come back because they connected with the world and personality behind it.
The good news is that creating a memorable brand doesn't have to be expensive.
When I first started, I definitely didn't have the budget for custom boxes or premium packaging. Instead, I focused on the small details I could control:
- Designing a consistent color palette and visual style.
- Keeping my product photography bright with recognizable lighting (I have my LED light in a specific color).
- Using matching packaging across different product collections.
- Adding branded labels to packages and product packaging.
- Including thank-you cards and small freebies to create a memorable unboxing experience.
Making these small details consistent helped my business feel more professional without requiring a huge investment.
Finding tools that saved me time became just as important as designing new products.
One of my favorite business investments has been my MUNBYN label printer.

What started as a tool for printing shipping labels eventually became part of my branding process, too. Today, I use it to print labels for product packaging, organize inventory, and add branded touches throughout my fulfillment process. I also print logo labels for the paper bags I use at markets. Instead of investing in expensive custom bags, I can turn simple kraft bags into something that feels uniquely owloArt. It's a small detail, but seeing customers walk around the market carrying my branded bags makes the business feel more recognizable, and those little branding moments really add up.
Having reliable tools that make branding easier allows me to focus on what I love most: creating art and growing my business.
If there's one thing I hope other small business owners take away from my journey, it's this...
Don't wait until your branding feels perfect before you start. Branding grows with your business.
A funny example is owloArt's very first mascot. It was actually an owl—because I was (and still am!) a night owl. As my business evolved, so did my artwork and the story I wanted to tell.
Today, owloArt is represented by a sleepy bunny with little dark circles under its eyes, along with a cast of original friends who have become part of the brand's personality.
Looking back, I'm so glad I didn't wait until everything was "perfect" before putting my work out into the world. If I had, owloArt might not exist today.
My art style changed. My mascot changed. Even my packaging has changed over the years. But the heart of my brand, creating cozy artwork that makes people smile, has always stayed the same.
Your brand doesn't have to be perfect on day one; it just has to feel like you. Everything else can grow alongside your business.
If you're ready for your own next milestone, MUNBYN's My First Highlight campaign is a great place to start.
It's a wonderful opportunity to celebrate your small business journey, connect with other entrepreneurs, gain community exposure, and even have the chance to win a MUNBYN printer and label kit.
Every successful business starts with one small step. Whether you're opening your first shop or working toward your next milestone, don't be afraid to share your story; you never know who you'll inspire along the way.
